Why Compliance Matters: The gate industry has undergone significant regulatory changes focused on safety. Whether you have a residential or commercial gate system, it's important to know where your equipment stands. Very few power gate opener systems currently installed meet these requirements — and non-compliance can leave you exposed to liability.

Gate Requirements What Every Gate System Must Meet

Structural & Physical Requirements:

  • Gates must have auxiliary supports to prevent tipping more than 45 degrees from vertical (ASTM F2200, para 4.2)
  • Gates must be properly balanced so they do not open or close on their own when disconnected from the operator
  • No protrusions greater than one-half inch are permitted on the bottom vertical edge — and no protrusion of any length may have sharp edges

Allowable Protrusions Include:

  • Top pickets and decorative designs
  • Gate locks, wheels, and positive stops on horizontal slide gates
  • Bottom retainers in Class IV horizontal slide gates
  • Positive stops at the top of vertical lift gates

Security Fencing Requirements:

  • Barbed wire must be installed no lower than six feet in height
  • Barbed tape must be installed no lower than eight feet in height
  • These restrictions apply to any gate panel intended to be automated

Automated Gate Requirements:

  • All gate latches must be disabled on automated gates
